Interview with Sophie KingBoard member at MMC in Oban
Why did you want to become a trustee?
I originally attended the weekly women's group for about a year, and i then became a volunteer and got involved with helping set up the young person's group. I wanted to become a trustee because I absolutely love being involved with the good work of MMC. When I was approached and asked if I wanted to become a trustee, I couldn't turn that opportunity down.
"When I was approached and asked if I wanted to become a trustee, I couldn't turn that opportunity down." What are the main responsibilities of being a trustee on your board?
I only just joined the trustee board a month ago, however we have regular meetings and I have attended one so far via zoom. We are waiting for trustee training, however that is TBC due to COVID-19. I believe I have the responsibility to make decisions at a strategic level for MMC, so I have a say along with the other members of the board about decisions for the charity.

What is your background in terms of skills and experience?
In terms of background experience, I have been a volunteer since I was 15. I volunteered with another Oban charity, and I was also involved with the youth forum, where I completed a Young Leader's award. I was also a clan leader at Oban High School, where i led weekly assemblies and supported my year group in the school. Throughout the entirety of high school, I was a resident of Glencruitten Hostel, due to the fact that I lived on a remote island. In my last year, I was awarded the 'Hostel Cup' for my support and positive influence on the younger residents of the hostel.
I am currently a second year psychology student at University of Aberdeen. I am also in the process of gaining a COSCA award in Counselling Skills with the university. I am also a class rep for my psychology class this semester. |
How do you make sure you are being effective/doing a good job both individually and as a board?
|
"I try to be a positive and level-headed individual." |
As I have not been a trustee for very long that's hard to answer at this time. However I try to be a positive and level-headed individual.
What’s been the hardest thing about being a trustee?
It's been a challenge because i'm not there physically, but we are all looking at ways to make sure that this situation will work.
"Thanks for having me for this wee interview!" |
What’s been the best thing about being a trustee so far?
Being able to give something back to the charity that's helped me.
Lastly, what would you say to anyone who was looking to become a trustee?
I would say go for it - it's a great opportunity and you really feel like you're making a difference in helping change lives.
