Covid-19 – Insurance implications for community groups and volunteering

Support for those helping their communities: As a community group, you may already have insurance for your activities, and if you are responding to Covid-19 some of those activities may have changed. It is worth checking whether your existing policy covers your activities in response to Covid-19 with your insurers. If you need an add-on insurance policy to cover Covid-19 activities we can assist with this.

The council would like to assist you with insurance matters as you are a valued partner in our approach to supporting people in Argyll and Bute at this time.

For constituted groups with existing insurance

If your group requires insurance cover for activities being specifically undertaken during COVID-19 response, in addition to the policy that you have, Argyll & Bute Council has identified a suitable group insurance policy, operated by our insurer, which specialises in providing insurance cover (Public Liability, Employers’ Liability) for volunteer community groups, charities and non-profit organisations.

The Council has agreed to assist in funding the cost of the insurance cover for your group, where these are reasonable and where your group incurs costs as a result of renewing or taking out new insurance to cover Covid-19 activities only.

Cover for your groups activities during COVID-19 response can be obtained by contacting Zurich for a quote 0800 917 9420.

At the time of calling the insurer they will require you to provide the following information, to allow them to provide you with a tailored quote:

  • Full details of what activities your group is undertaken
  • How many people are involved in these activities
  • At what locations are the activities being undertaken
  • How long do you anticipate you will be undertaking these activities
  • Will these activities bring you into contact with children

More information on the cover available and other information can be found here:

https://www.zurich.co.uk/en/charity-insurance

Once you have obtained your quote from Zurich, please contact the Council’s Insurance Officer, Sam Clarke, who will be in a position to assist you further and ensure the cover you have obtained is correct for your activities.  He will also be the point of contact with regards to processing the payment of the policy.  Sam can be contacted as follows:

Tel: 01546 604381
Email: sam.clarke@argyll-bute.gov.uk

If you are a non-constituted group, or one which has recently organised in response to Covid-19 and do not have existing insurance

Please contact: communitydevelopment@argyll-bute.gov.uk for advice and assistance.

More information

Support for those who use their cars to help their communities: If you are using your own car for voluntary purposes to transport medicines or groceries to support others who are impacted by Covid-19, your car insurance cover will not be affected. You do not need to contact your insurer to update your documents or extend your cover. Please see link to this information from Association of British Insurers, https://www.abi.org.uk/news/news-articles/motor-and-home-insurance-commitments/
