Positive Destinations
This TSI programme, (funded by the UK Government's Shared Prosperity Fund) is constructed to help anyone needing support to reduce barriers to their personal growth and development, or access to education or employment.
The programme offers volunteering placements for six months, in organisations across Argyll & Bute, with an assigned mentor to provide support throughout this time. Being a volunteer can boost confidence and self-esteem, helping the individual to stay active and engaged. It can also provide a sense of purpose and fulfilment and has been linked to improved mental and physical health as well as reducing stress, anxiety, and depression.
The initial role for the mentor is to help find a placement that provides the benefits best suited to the potential volunteer. These can include improving communication and interpersonal skills and the opportunity to gain new practical skills, as well as accumulating valuable work experience. It also provides opportunities to make valuable connections and meet new people, who may become new friends, sharing interests and activities.
Once the placement has started the mentor will stay in close, and regular, contact with the volunteer to ensure they get the most benefit from their efforts, and in a way that fits well with their expectations and hopes.
The overall aim is to enable participants to see new opportunities and a way forward once the placement is completed. For some, deciding to continue as a volunteer can provide an environment that fits well with their personal view of the future. Alternatively, skills strengthened and developed during volunteering may be the first step towards starting a search for full or part-time work, or seeking a path into education. Whatever the decision, the assigned mentor will have worked with the volunteer during the placement to help them make a good decision for this next step into the future.

The possibility of gaining a Saltire Award, if you are under 25, on completion of the 6 months placement is also under discussion.
