Getting your oomph back week 12

This week we will look at positive affirmations and how we can take steps to manage the negative chatter box to become one which instead is kind and inspires us. When we want to get our oomph back, it matters the story we are telling ourselves about ourselves and our lives. Even when things may be challenging, there is more than one way to look at what is happening, as someone once said, it matters we find ways to walk on the sunny side of the street.

Being aware of our negative chatterbox is the beginning of changing what we say to ourselves and how we feel about ourselves. Positive affirmations are statements we make to ourselves that are encouraging and positive. Positive affirmations help us to put things into perspective and build a sense of trust in ourselves.

This is often difficult to do to begin with, but with enough practice you will learn to believe positive things about yourself and your abilities, just the same way you have learned to believe negative things.

There are sets of affirmation cards on www.copescotland.com e.g. https://www.copescotland.com/resources/confidence-affirmation-cards  You may even want to create your own affirmation jar. This video offers you some ideas how to do that https://www.copescotland.com/resources/making-an-affirmation-jar

Okay now we have recognized negative self-talk isn’t helpful how can we learn to have a kinder internal voice? Here are some examples of positive self-affirmations

  • I gave it my best.
  • I can overcome this.
  • I can handle this.
  • I can beat this, I will not be beaten.
  • Every day I am becoming more and more confident. I am a beautiful person.
  • I am good company.
  • I am a pleasure to know.
  • I can change this situation.
  • I can think positively about this situation.
  • I have a lot in my life to be thankful for.

Maybe take a moment to reflect on what else you would add to this list?

It takes practice to replace a negative chatterbox with positive affirmations, however, they can help us regain that sense of ‘oomph, zest for life that we have decided is important for us.

Now if it has meaning for you try to practice replacing negative with positive thoughts. If it feels safe to do so, reflect on some of the negative thoughts, internal chatter and what may be a more inspiring thought to replace what with e.g.

Negative thought                                                   Positive thought I could

                                                                                      replace it with

I am useless, I never get anything right                This is new and I need to learn, but

there are many things I am good at

Next week we will look at relationships. Sometimes we allow others to hold us back from making positive changes in our lives that contribute to our sense of well-being, self-esteem, and confidence and how we feel about ourselves and what we believe ourselves to be capable of.  That means we also have the power to reduce their influence and replace their negativity with our own positivity. For now, be kind to yourself, you are worth it. We can get there, one step at a time
