Grow Food Grow Dunoon’s Open Day!

Saturday saw a visit to Dunoon Community Development Trust‘s Grow Food Grow Dunoon open-day at Struan Lodge (a Residential Care Home and Day Care centre for the Elderly) where, over the past year, a team of Volunteers have transformed the grounds into a community growing space with an accessible path.

The transformation of the previously grassy grounds is inspiring to say the least – with Residents now enjoying herbaceous borders and banks, fruit trees, berry cages, veggie seedlings in polytunnels and a ‘ten bed system’ on its way to producing food for the Care Home’s kitchen. It is a truly phenomenal testament to the power of committed Volunteers.

Equally satisfying is the use by UHI Argyll Horticulture students who are contributing theirs skills to the project, while also learning at the site.
Community Health-Wealth Building, Sustainable Living, Personal Development and Wellbeing beams in, out and all about at this project. It is surely a blueprint for resilient, sustainable community projects of the future… which need to start now.
