Selfcare week chat

This week is selfcare week. The selfcare forum have invited people to join a chat with Linked in, noon 17th November. I thought it may be helpful to share the prompts for the chat as they may be conversations you want to have with people you support and work with.
- What does self-care mean to you and why is it important?
- Our research says people want more control over their health but they feel unsupported by health professionals, how can we address this?
- Poor health literacy is a barrier to self-care behaviour, and leads to health inequality, how do we increase levels of health literacy in the population?
- Ask Your Pharmacist Week highlighted the many services pharmacies provide locally – is the message getting through to people?
- How do we tackle misinformation and disinformation when it comes to health information, given how crucial it is to ensure accuracy?
- Common mental health problems like anxiety and depression have increased by 45% since 1993, what can we do to protect our mental wellness?
- In 2023, 1 in 5 deaths in England and Wales were considered “avoidable” – how do we support people and reduce preventable and treatable deaths? (The selfcare forum is based in England, in Scotland you can get that information here https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/publications/avoidable-mortality-2023/ In 2023, around one in four deaths was considered avoidable in Scotland.
- Our research shows people often forget basic NHS advice, like exercise or alcohol guidelines. How can we make public health information more memorable?
- Should we be worried or excited about AI when it comes to health, public health, and self-care — and why?”

Selfcare is essential for wellbeing, from brushing our teeth, to staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, finding ways to rest, adopt routines and habits which support our health and try and avoid those which do not do us any favours, be creative, express how we feel, build our emotional intelligence https://www.6seconds.org/ and so much more. We are busy, in different ways but most of us may find we are busy, but, finding time for selfcare is never time wasted. Moments here and there can make a difference.
Thanks for reading, remember, you matter
