Getting your oomph back

Regaining your energy in winter
I spoke last week about starting to cover sections of getting back your ‘oomph’ (energy, motivation, sense of purpose) workbook. I am going to start sharing that week beginning 19th of Jan as some people want it sent direct to their email, so it is to give people time to share that with me. If you would like it directly emailed to you let me know [email protected]
Before I start going over the booklet just to share this is for self reflection, it is not a replacement for professional advice. If anyone feels they are not in a place to explore why their energy is flat, or are going through some form of treatment or therapy just now then speak to your healthcare team to see if it is right for you.
If anyone missed the link to the workbook it is below.
Sometimes in life sad, bad and disappointing things will happen, things will change, and we may not like it. This workbook is about how we can learn to accept these things as a point in time rather the totality of our whole life! Not a permanent condition or a worse ‘new normal’.
It will not stop sad, bad, or disappointing things from happening nor will it stop things from changing. Everything changes sooner or later. You have the power to help see the positive side of change and make lemonade when life hands you lemons. Do you see change as a door slamming in your face or, a new door opening with lots of possible new directions? Surviving and thriving depend, in part, on how we adapt to changes.
Please remember if you are in crisis at the moment, it may not be the time to use this booklet. When you are not feeling so much in crisis, this booklet may help you – on your own or with a professional- to reflect on your own thinking and experiences in ways that help you feel better and improve the quality of your life.
Before we started the booklet, I just wanted to share some tips on reflective practice to have think about
-
Be clear within your self why you think reflecting on the points within the getting back your oomph booklet has meaning for you. If you feel you would like to have more energy and motivation then think about why this has meaning for you. Do it because you want to, please do not make it another ‘need to do’ thing.
-
Create a quiet and comfortable space where you can reflect without interruptions. Maybe think about the environment, is the lighting calm, is there maybe nice music you can relax to playing? If this is hard to achieve at home, think where else you could go to have a quiet space, even for a wee while.
-
The workbook can be downloaded from our website, you may want to do it with paper and pen, have these ready, maybe even have a wee journaling book to capture your thoughts in.
-
We can all feel time poor these days so finding time to reflect may be a challenge, before starting it really is worth considering how and when you can make even 5min 10min to begin with. Even if this is weekly to begin with it all helps. The time just needs to be enough for you to have a think and reflect, what matters less is the amount of time but the frequency, so better a little often than a lot now and then. Do what works for you
-
Do a wee breathing exercise or something before you start to help clear your mind so you have room to think.
-
Have a positive view of this, see it as something which is helpful for you as opposed to another chore.
-
It may be some things come up when you are thinking which are a bit challenging as there are perhaps some changes need to be made. Think of personal development the same way as athletes in training view the work they need to do for the next race etc. Do not be hard on yourself, do not take on too much too soon, just reflect are there some small changes which could lead to a big difference and how can you bring them into your life. If you need support or advice to do that, look to your network or who else you can talk to. There are often more supports than we realise. Perhaps even if doing this workbook through work explore a peer support group.
-
After reflecting think about setting goals. We use SMART goal setting for work, we can do this for our own life too (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). There are ideas on our website about goal setting https://www.copescotland.com/resources/goal-setting-snakes-and-ladders

Be kind to yourself and remember you are amazing. Reflection is part of the story, where you take it next is up to you, do it because it matters to you.
Thanks for reading, next week we begin the first reflection, any questions please get in touch
