Stay safe and cool in the sun

A wee bit of sunshine can certainly lift our spirits. Many of us feel noticeably more cheerful on a bright, sunny day and we notice those around us smiling more too. However, like many good things, too much sun can have its drawbacks. When temperatures rise to uncomfortable levels, it can lead to a variety of issues.

Effects of Excessive Heat

  • Fatigue and Sleep Disruption: Intense heat can make us feel tired, as it often disrupts our sleep patterns. When we are unable to sleep properly, our energy levels plummet, leaving us feeling lethargic throughout the day.
  • Increased Irritability: The discomfort from excessive heat can make us more irritable. Small tasks that we usually handle with ease can feel like a real hassle, this can lead to feelings of frustration and impatience.
  • Anxiety and Unease: The inability to cool down can leave us feeling anxious and unsettled. This constant discomfort can exacerbate feelings of stress and worry.
  • Impact on Health Conditions: For those with pre-existing health conditions, high temperatures can worsen symptoms. It’s crucial to seek professional advice on how to stay safe in the sun if you or someone you know has a health condition.

Regulating Body Temperature

Even for those who love the sun, heat and humidity can be overwhelming. Here are some tips to help regulate body temperature and maintain comfort:

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help your body stay cool and function properly.

Wear Light Clothing: Opt for loose-fitting, light-colored clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton to help your body cool down.

Seek Shade: Whenever possible, find a shady spot to relax and escape direct sunlight, especially during peak hours.

Use Fans or Air Conditioning: Keep your living space cool by using fans or air conditioning, if available, to help maintain a comfortable environment. Paper fans can also be helpful to help stay cool.  We used to share these on a hot day when offering training to help participants stay cool. They are not expensive to buy, or recycle paper and have fun making your own.

Take Cool Showers: A refreshing shower can help lower your body temperature and provide much-needed relief from the heat. Or put a cool cloth on the back of your neck or forehead. Even some kitchen roll soaked in cold water can help make a difference.

Take it easy: It is important when the weather is really warm that we take it easy, and try to relax and protect ourselves from over exertion. People who work outdoors need to be especially careful, this link offers more information https://www.hse.gov.uk/temperature/employer/outdoor-working.htm

Consider children, pets and people who may be vulnerable: We may need to be vigilant to others around us who through age or vulnerability may need a wee bit of support to stay safe in the sun. Our pets and wildlife too need extra attention when the weather is very warm,

Protect your body: Remember to protect your body during a heat wave and also your eyes from the glare of the sun.
